Beach and Bay
Our home overlooks North Chatham’s Pleasant Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Although the coastal geography is shifting quickly these days, there is still a barrier beach—the outer bar—dividing the bay from the ocean. If you'd like to rent kayaks or paddleboards--there are plenty of places nearby, that makes for an excellent way to explore the bay.
Just about 100 feet from the house is a staircase down to the beach, where there is excellent swimming at high tide, endless entertainment observing sea creatures at low tide, and always a nice wide beach to nap or play on.
A word on the term “private beach,” which I notice is used often in real estate literature: in Massachusetts, beaches are public below the high tide mark. What this means in practice is that although people out for a stroll with their dog or their clamming rake occasionally pass by and say hello, I’ve never known anyone who wasn’t staying at the house to settle in with their beach towel for the day.
